Vulnerability in Leadership
For easily a decade now I’ve been proposing that a leadership strength is demonstrated somewhat counter-intuitively in ‘vulnerability’. I must be right as a number of academics and influencers are now saying the same thing! (OK, perhaps as long as I have.)
Here, vulnerability is not a sign of weakness but a knowing transparency in gaps and personal awareness and dimension; visible acceptance and acknowledgement that you don’t have all the answers (but you more than likely know the questions); and a disposition relaxed enough to celebrate that there are others smarter, quicker and even possibly more assertive, and to engage those around you.
Vulnerable leaders celebrate the presence of others and the contribution and strength they bring; they reward the challenger; they are grateful for the innovator.
These leaders develop healthy cultures and organic and resilient organisations. Where’s the weakness in that?
